Addition of Vitamin D Improves Asthma

Physicians have long recognized that vitamin D is essential for good health. Now, surprising research reported by doctors of the National Jewish Health, has shown that vitamin D can dramatically improve asthma in children and adults. The results of their study demonstrated that reactions to common allergens, the efficacy of corticosteroid medications and lung function are linked to vitamin D levels and all are improved when adequate levels of vitamin D are present.
Of the research, Dr. Daniel Searing, MD said, “Asthmatic children in our study who had low levels of vitamin D were more allergic, had poorer lung function and used more medications. Conversely, our findings suggest that vitamin D supplementation may help reverse steroid resistance in asthmatic children and reduce the effective dose of steroids needed for our patients.”
100 children with asthma were studied. Their vitamin levels were similar to our adult population with 64% showing low vitamin D levels; 17% of those were deficient. They found that the children with lower levels reacted more adversely to indoor allergens like dogs and dust mites. Other tests further substantiated the findings. Those with low vitamin D had corresponding low FEV1 and FEV1/FVC measures, meaning they are less able to move adequate amounts of air through the lungs and they used more medication, on average.
Researchers then performed lab tests. They isolated immune cells and found the presence of vitamin D significantly increased corticosteroid functioning on the cells, sometimes by a factor of 10. Other cells were infected with bacteria to create resistance to steroid medication. By adding vitamin D, the corticosteroids were again, made effective.
Senior author, Dr. Donald Leung, MD, PhD, stated, “Our work suggests that vitamin D enhances the anti-inflammatory function of corticosteroids. If future studies confirm these findings vitamin D may help patients achieve better control of their respiratory symptoms with less medication.
