Anti-Inflammatory Action of Fish Oil Helps Arthritis

You’ve heard the old cliché; a little bit goes a long way. This appears to be the case with omega-3 fatty acids, found in cold-water fish, canola and flaxseed oils. These wonderful micronutrients continue to shine in the limelight as contributors to good health. An article published in Nature last month reports the specific mechanism for their anti-inflammatory effects and provides hope for a new drug therapy for arthritis, sepsis and stroke.
“We have known for some time that fish oils can help with conditions like arthritis which are linked to inflammation. What we’ve shown here is how the body processes a particular ingredient of fish oils into Resolvin D2. We’ve also looked in detail at this chemical, determining at least some of the ways it relieves inflammation. It seems to be a very powerful chemical and a small amount can have a large effect,” said lead researcher, Mauro Perretti, professor of immunopharmacology, Queen Mary, University of London.
Inflammation occurs when, essentially, the body attacks itself. On the cellular level, part of this process is a build up of white blood cells, leukocytes, on the endothelium, the inner walls of blood vessels. Perretti and his team isolated these cells in the lab and were able to create an anti-inflammatory effect by adding Resolvin D2 to endothelial cells. It triggered a release of nitric oxide from these cells, which then kept the leukocytes from sticking. This was encouraging and provides a platform on which to build future drug therapies. Presently anti-inflammatory drugs can suppress the immune system but Resolvin D2 does not seem to.
Perretti’s research gives hope for those suffering from inflammatory conditions. “This research is important because it explains at least one way in which fish oils can help in different types of arthritis. We can also work on this chemical and see if it can be used not only to treat or even prevent arthritis, but also as a possible treatment for a variety of other diseases associated with inflammation.”
If you choose to increase your fish oil intake other research has recommended eating two 3-oz servings of fish daily. If you prefer taking fish oil supplements do not take more than the recommended dose as side effects have been noted.
