Statistics show that 80% of North Americans will suffer from low back pain at sometime during their life. Almost all back injuries heal within 3 months, but 10% of individuals who injure their back go on to experience chronic back pain throughout their life.
Research at the University of Alberta and the University of Regina has shown that weight-bearing exercise is an effective way to ease back pain and improve daily function by strengthening the back and other muscles throughout the body.
Robert Kell, an assistant professor of exercise physiology, University of Alberta, Augustana Campus stated, “Any activity that makes you feel better is something you should pursue, but the research indicates that we get better pain management results from resistance training.”
The research team gave volunteers a 16-week weight-training exercise program and compared their results to people on an aerobic program using jogging, treadmill or elliptical machines. Their back pain and daily functional activity levels were evaluated.
Both training regimes improved overall fitness and volunteers lost weight but the difference was in pain reduction and increased daily functionality. The aerobics group improved by 16% but the weight-training group improved by 60%!
Kell explains, “We tried to strengthen the entire body and by doing that, we decreased the fatigue people felt throughout the day. They were better able to perform their activities of daily living.”
