Corporate Weight Loss Plans Found To Be Effective

Forward-thinking corporations are now offering weight management programs to their employees and seeing great weight-loss successes and reduced medical costs.
Dr. Michael Benedict, MD, of the University of Cincinnati, stated, “Most employed adults in the US spend nearly half of their waking hours at their place of employment. Worksite based programs have great potential to positively impact our current obesity epidemic.”
Along with colleagues, Dr. Benedict analyzed 11 published studies over the past 14 years on this topic. The weight-loss programs offered to employees lasted between from 2-18 months, and varied in the level of intensity. He discovered that the high intensity programs which included education and regular (more than once a month) face-to-face counseling or telephonic counseling yielded the best results. The participants showed a weight loss of 2.2 lbs-14 lbs as compared to non-participants who averaged from a 1.5lb loss to 1.1lb gain.
Dr. Benedict surmised, “Worksite-based programs do tend to result in weight loss for the people that participate in them.”
The financial benefits of a corporate wellness program are also becoming clear both for the employer and employee as more cost sharing for health benefits takes place. Weight loss reduces the risk for chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke and diabetes which are expensive and result in loss of workdays. Dr. Benedict also points out, “Studies have shown that other worksite health interventions targeting high risk employees, like smokers and people with hypertension, may benefit employers financially within only a few years.”
Many people spend a good share of their life with co-workers so losing weight together can be supportive, fun and preventive.
