Diabetes and Depression the Deadly Duo For Your Heart

If you have type 2 diabetes or know someone who does, there is something you need to know that could be life saving. 80% of diabetics will have either a heart attack, stroke or lose their foot or leg due to poor circulation. Diabetes wrecks havoc on the vascular system. Here is the unknown factor in all of this: depression appears to be a key component that tips people over the edge.
Dr. Anastasia Georgiades, PhD, at Duke University Medical Center studied 933 patients with coronary artery disease. “We found a trend showing that the probability of death increases as the level of depression increases in diabetic patients with coronary artery disease. Our data appear to show an important interaction between type 2 diabetes and depression, meaning that physicians should closely monitor their heart patients who have both of these disorders.”
During the course of the four-year study Georgiades observed 135 deaths. The risk of dying increased by 20-30% in patients with high depression scores and diabetes.
She offered some explanations. “Patients with type 2 diabetes typically have an extensive self-care regimen involving special diet, medications, exercise and numerous appointments with their doctors. ‘It may be that such patients who are depressed might not be as motivated to carry out all these activities, thereby putting them at higher risk.”
Dr Georgiades concluded, “There is some sort of synergistic effect between type 2 diabetes and depression that we don’t fully understand. In our analysis, we controlled for factors that could influence mortality, such as heart disease severity and age. For whatever reason, these patients were still at higher risk of dying, and future research will aim to investigate the mechanisms for this association.”
