Heart Patients Still Have High Blood Fat Levels

According to recent findings, most individuals with heart disease continue to have high levels of fat in their blood, a key reason that caused their disease in the first place. Doctors believe that persistent, high levels of blood fats found in individuals who have disease puts them at risk for future heart attacks.
“This is not good news, as these factors are important components of cardiovascular disease”, says Nathan D. Wong, Heart Disease Prevention Program Director at UC Irvine. Statistics indicate that 50% of people who have had a heart attack, will have a second event within 5 years. Continued high levels of blood fats are thought to play a central role in these repeat occurrences.
Blood fats or lipids are measured by the amounts of HDL (‘good’ cholesterol), LDL (‘bad’ cholesterol), and triglycerides in the blood. The recommended HDL level is over 40mg/dl for men and over 50mg/dl for women, triglycerides should be under 150mg/dl and total cholesterol should be under 200mg/dl. Total blood cholesterol is a measure of LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and other lipid components. LDL values should be under 130mg/dl unless you have heart disease, in which case, it needs to be under 100mg/dl according to most doctors.
Wong analyzed blood lipid data collected on 3000 people in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2003-2004. He found that those without heart and vascular diseases generally had healthier blood lipid levels. 67% had normal values for HDL and triglycerides and 85% had an acceptable LDL levels. By contrast, only 17% of those with heart disease had healthy fat values for HDL and triglycerides and only 37% had a healthy LDL level.
Wong stated, “While national treatment recommendations have focused on aggressive management of LDL-C levels, mainly through statin therapy, we have found little change in HDL-C levels and an actual increase in trigylceride levels.”
He recommends that everyone knows their blood lipid levels, especially those who have heart disease. The goal for someone who has heart disease is to achieve normal blood fat values. This can be achieved through a primary emphasis on diet, and supported by exercise and drug intervention.
According to Dr. Caldwell Essylstyn author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease the blood lipid goal for someone with heart disease is to achieve an LDL value of less than 80 mg/ dl and a total cholesterol value of less than 150mg/dl. His dietary recommendations are: no animal or animal products; no cheese, eggs or dairy products; no oils of any kind; and no nuts.

I would have been nice if the article had stated what the sources of HDL (good cholesterol) are.
