Hidden Fructose Is Making America Fat

Over the past 20 years high fructose corn syrup has replaced table sugar as the most common sweetening agent used in foods and beverages because it is less expensive for manufacturers. Researchers have been suspicious that fructose behaves differently than sugar when it is metabolized and could be a big factor in the reason why Americans have steadily increased in weight during this same time period.
Now, research at the University of Cincinnati exposes the dangers of fructose-sweetened soda.
Dr. Matthias Tschop, MD, stated, “Our study shows how fat mass increases as a direct consequence of soft drink consumption.” Dr. Tschop is a member of the Obesity Research Center at the University of Cincinnati’s Genome Research Institute. Through mouse studies he found that metabolism changes with fructose consumption and causes more fat to be stored.
Mice were grouped according to beverages offered. The control group received only water. Those drinking fructose-sweetened water gained 18.7% body weight while the groups receiving other sweeteners gained an average of 11.4%. The fructose group had 90% more body fat than the control group!
Surprisingly they did not eat more calories. In fact, total caloric intake was less in the fructose group than the other groups but according to Tschop, “…they gained significantly more body fat within a few weeks.” He believes the fructose changed their metabolism in a way to promote fat storage.
Soda isn’t the only culprit here. Many surprising foods, not just desserts contain fructose. It’s in fast foods, processed foods, condiments, including salad dressing, sugary drinks, cereals, and some juices. In an article on SlashFood.com, David Zinczenko, author of Eat This, Not That, had this to say about the seemingly healthy 9-grain bread at Subway, “As for that high-fructose corn syrup, well, there's more of it than any of the grains. With the requisite soda on the side, you're talking about a major corn-syrup overload.”

True False question gives the wrong answer, I put false because of this line, correct answer according to you is True. You Kersh are wrong! Your question:
Fructose not only adds more calories but may affect metabolism in such a way to make the soda drinker into a fat storing machine!
Might want to get someone to do fact checks before you ask questions.

Very interesting that when one comsumes fructose, changes occur on a metabolic level, and not necessarily on a caloric level.
I agree with Eric in that the question is misleading. I think what Kersh meant to point out is how fructose affects one's metabolism, and that it's not necessarily a higher caloric intake that can cause higher fat storage. What I want more clarified is this: is it high fructose corn syrup that is the culprit here? Fructose is the naturally-occuring sugar in fruit, so I hope that this doens't imply that eating fruit can cause one to store more fat!

too bad cavemen didn't have fructose. They were always looking for energy!
