Holistic Program Supports Patients Undergoing Traditional Cancer Treatment

The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, is using a
unique program that is showing great results for patients
undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. Cheryl Fallen, a
breast cancer survivor had this to say, “Overall, the program
makes you feel better about yourself. It’s a positive support
for cancer patients, and I really think it’s allowed me to be
more productive during my treatment.”
Dr. Eleanor Walker, MD, a cancer specialist at Henry Ford,
and her colleagues, developed ExCITE, (Exercise and
Cancer Integrative Therapies and Education). ExCITE
incorporates acupuncture, exercise and nutrition into a
patient’s cancer treatment and afterwards, in an effort to
alleviate some of the common side effects of treatment.
They include nausea, memory loss, pain, fatigue, hot
flashes, vomiting and neuropathy. Walker added, “Plus,
exercise is a great alternative to patients combating fatigue
and nausea who are considering using supplements which
may interfere with medications and chemotherapy they’re
taking during cancer treatment.”
50 patients, aged 35-80, all newly diagnosed with either
breast or prostate cancer, have been enrolled in this ongoing
study. Extensive diagnostic tests, including exercise
tolerance, are performed at the beginning of the program.
Each patient is given a customized program and followed
during cancer treatment and for one year after. The results
to date are promising.
Cheryl said, “ExCITE offers cancer patients a way to
holistically approach their cancer care by tailoring a specific
exercise routine to fit the needs of the patient, whether
it’s rehabilitation after surgery, or to enhance circulation
or improve the immune system prior to chemotherapy or
radiation.”
Dr. Walker is pleased with the results she is seeing and
concludes, “Using exercise as an approach to cancer care
has the potential to benefit patients both physically and
psychologically, as well as mitigate treatment side effects.”
