Is Heartburn Making Your Life Miserable

Every month 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once. Heartburn, however, has nothing to do with your heart. It occurs when stomach acid moves upward out of the stomach and irritates the cells lining the esophagus. The medical term for heartburn or acid reflux is called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
So why does the acid move out of the stomach and into the esophagus? Why doesn’t it stay in the stomach? Normally, a protective valve exists between the stomach and the esophagus. This valve fails to function properly and protect the esophagus with GERD. When you experience this burning sensation, acid is literally scorching the lining of your esophagus.
There are several reasons why this protective valve fails to work as it should. Eating too much food at one meal. The volume of food eaten at one sitting can make the valve incompetent so it does not close properly. Eating too fast: grab, gulp and go. Lying down: allow at least three hours after eating before going to bed.
In addition, other factors can increase stomach acid production and cause heartburn. Meals with a high fat content like burgers, French fries, ice cream or fried foods. Drinks: coffee, tea, colas, carbonated sodas or alcohol. Specific foods: oranges, grapefruits, lemons, tomatoes, hot sauce, salsa or chocolate. All of these foods can increase stomach acid production and increase the frequency of acid moving into the esophagus.
The most common drug to treat GERD is called a proton pump inhibitor or PPI. This drug stops or decreases the amount of stomach acid that is produced: the less stomach acid that is made, the less likely it can leak into the esophagus and cause a burn. For many this is an effective treatment.
