Kids Prefer Large Portions

Given the option, Canadian fifth-graders prefer bigger portions of snacks and fast foods and smaller portions of vegetables than the recommended amounts, according to a recent research study in the Journal of the ADA.
The published study found children who ate at fast-food restaurants more than once per week were more likely to consider large portions of french fries and small portions of vegetables to be "usual," as did children from socioeconomically disadvantaged families and those who frequently ate while watching TV.

Make certain to use measuring cups, spoons or a kitchen scale to compare your servings with MyPyramid recommendations or the serving sizes listed on the product's Nutrition Facts panel. How much you eat is just as important what you eat. Talk with a registered dietitian for help in making smart portion options.
What is the most powerful and effective incentive for children to eat healthfully and get the exercise the need? A recent survey of parents and kids by the ADA Foundation showed that parents are kids' top role model when it comes to nutrition and healthy consuming.
Be sure to help your kids learn to make healthful options and get moving:
• Plan regular family activities that are physically active
• Start a walking club
• Make certain to take your family to the park to inline skate while you walk
• Make walking the dog a fun job in lieu of a chore.
Let your children help plan menus, go to the store with you and prepare and serve meals.
