Lack of Sleep Leads to Weight Gain

Results of a recent study show participants with limited sleep voluntarily ate less food but gained weight; an average of 2.9 pounds in only 11 days. It is no secret that most Americans are sleep deprived and the majority of people sleep less than 6 hours a night. Still others work shifts that reduce sleep and alter natural biorhythms of the sleep/wake cycles. What this study points out is that despite a decrease in appetite the sleep deprived group gained weight.
Dr. Siobhan Banks, PhD, University of South Australia, led the study of 92 healthy people (52 men) ages 22 to 45. They were first given 10 hours in bed for two nights then were sleep restricted for 9 nights, receiving less than 6 hours of sleep. Participants had full access to food and were allowed to eat whenever they wanted. 70% reported a loss of appetite by the fifth day. The surprise came at the end of the study with participants gaining an average of 2.9 pounds while the control group did not gain weight.
Researchers are unsure as to why this weight gain occurred. One factor may be the ability to snack for longer periods of time when people are sleeping less. Dr. Banks suggests, “Healthy low fat/sugar snacks should be available so the temptation to eat comfort foods is reduced.”
Given the fact that our 24 hour world has the effect of short changing everyone with the optimal amount of 8 hours sleep, this study raises a warning flag. You could be eating when you are not hungry sleep deprived and find yourself a few pounds heavier.
