New Version of Old Drug Gives Hope For Treating Rosacea

Rosacea is a common condition showing up on the faces of 14 million adults in the US. It manifests as itchy, painful, thickened skin with redness, bumps, pimples and sometimes watery eyes and is more common on fair skin. If left untreated it can start to burn or sting. There is no known cure or cause but a new twist to an old drug is showing promise for long-term treatment of this condition.
“Rosacea is in your face and on your face, reminding you every day of what’s going on in your skin.” Richard Fried, MD, Yardley Dermatology and Yardley Skin Enhancement and Wellness Center, is familiar with this new drug Oracea.
Historically, rosacea has been treated with antibiotics but with long-term use, the patient develops resistance and the drugs lose efficacy. CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals created Oracea by altering the antibiotic doxycycline by removing most of the antibiotic and leaving the anti-inflammatory ingredients. It can be used long term without stomach upset and other side effects associated with antibiotics.
K. Olivierio, a rosacea sufferer of almost 20 years said, “Rosacea is like this monster that’s in you and has to get out.” After using Oracea she is now blemish-free.
The success of Oracea shows that the underlying problem is inflammation and gives hope to those dealing with rosacea.
In addition to Oracea there are topical medications available. Your doctor can decide which course of action is best for you. It does help to keep your face clean and use non-irritating skin care products. Laser treatments and surgery are options for more difficult cases. Patients have reported that the condition worsens with menopause, stress, alcohol, spicy foods, strenuous exercise and hot baths.
