Real Foods Are Your Best Bet to Prevent Disease

Research continues to gather evidence that many of the ‘big diseases’ like cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease are preventable. What’s the secret? It’s inexpensive and is as easy as running to the grocery store.
Real, whole foods, high in antioxidants are deservedly getting a lot of press in the fight against life threatening chronic illnesses.
Scientists believe that a common cause of many chronic diseases is the destruction of DNA by free radicals. Iron and copper ions play a significant role in the formation of these free radicals and are being studied at Clemson University by chemist Julia Brumaghim and her team.
She has found that foods rich in antioxidants stop this damage. “Our studies have shown that antioxidants even at low concentrations found in these foods bind to iron and copper and prevent DNA damage.”
Free radicals are naturally produced as part of normal cellular metabolism. They are typically neutralized by existing biochemical systems in the body. With age these systems become less effective and diet plays a greater role in neutralization. Foods rich in antioxidants, super micronutrients, can neutralize free radicals and stop the potential damage they cause.
Here is a partial list of foods loaded with antioxidants.
1. Fruits and vegetables, apples with the peels, berries, red, kidney, pinto and black beans, avocados, cabbage, cherries, pears, plums, pineapple, oranges, kiwi, artichokes, spinach, sweet potatoes, broccoli, onions
2. Green tea, 100% fruit juices, red wine
3. walnuts, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios
4. cloves, cinnamon, ginger, oregano, turmeric
5. garlic, dark chocolate (the darker the better), oats
Antioxidant supplements are considered safe unless you exceed the recommended dose then it can be toxic. There are thousands of naturally occurring antioxidants and because food and nutrition research is still learning which ones are most helpful, supplements are far less effective that getting the nutrients directly from food. They generally contain just a few types of antioxidants.

Question, how do iron and copper get into out food?
Question, dieticians tell me that eating too many fruits is bad if you are diabetic. How do you balance this out.
Is this for real or just another research fad of the month.
