Spices May Prove A Cure For Cancer

Is it possible, a cure for cancer? That’s the million-dollar question, especially for the friends and family of the 40,610 women who died this year from breast cancer. Another 194,280 were diagnosed, according to the American Cancer Society.
Researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center are working for a dietary cure for cancer, targeting the stem cells from which tumors grow. Dr. Madhuri Kakarala, MD, PhD, RD, said, “If we can limit the number of stem cells, we can limit the number of cells with potential to form tumors.”
Chemotherapy can destroy a cancerous tumor but unfortunately doesn’t prevent recurrence. Cancer comes back because of cancer stem cells, cells that differentiate into any type of cell and that fuel tumors. Chemotherapy cannot target stem cells but Dr. Kakarala has found common dietary compounds that do interrupt the process of self-renewal in cancer stem cells without affecting healthy tissue.
He said, “The concept that dietary compounds can help is attractive, and curcumin and piperine appear to have very low toxicity.” Curcumin is in the Indian spice, turmeric, and piperine is in black pepper. He is incubating the spices with stem cells in the laboratory currently at 20 times dietary levels. It is NOT recommended to take high doses of these spices, as the experiments have not yet been performed on people although it does give hope for a future non-toxic cure for breast cancer.
Preventative drugs are available for estrogen related breast cancer. Kakarala offered, “Women at high risk of breast cancer right now can choose to take the drugs tamoxifen or raloxifene for prevention, but most women won’t take these drugs because there is too much toxicity.” Unfortunately, these drugs do not target the most aggressive forms of breast cancer. A drug therapy of curcumin and piperine would most likely be able to target all forms.
By destroying stem cells that create the tumor, regardless of its cause, we could possibly find a cure for the disease, one that doesn’t damage healthy tissue. Dr Kakarala will begin clinical trials in women in the spring of 2010.
