The Psychological Benefits of Exercise

A recent study by UF exercise psychologist Heather Hausenblas and research associate Anna Campbell is the first to systematically analyze the wide-ranged effects of exercise on body image. Research shows that people who are overweight and in poor health psychologically benefit from performing simple exercise and feel better about their bodies overall after working out. This discovery has created a great buzz in the medical community and is being studied.
Apparently, people in poor health receive just as much satisfaction as fit people from exercising! Hausenblas stated, ‘“You would think that if you become more fit that you would experience greater improvements in terms of body image, but that's not what we found," she said. "It may be that the requirements to receive the psychological benefits of exercise, including those relating to body image, differ substantially from the physical benefits."’
The consensus among many in the medical industry is that exercise, no matter the health status of an individual, will positively increase a person’s conception of their health status. By someone simply putting forth the effort to be physically active, the mental health of an individual is greatly improved, according to studies. This link between exercise and body image is proving to be a tool of encouragement to many who are seeking to feel better about their health status.
As negative body perception appears to be an increasing phenomenon in America, this research comes at a keen time. With millions being spent annually on body enhancement products and surgeries, the question is being asked, “What can be done naturally to improve our health perception?” Hausenblas went on to say, ‘"Body dissatisfaction is a huge problem in our society and is related to all sorts of negative behavior including yo-yo dieting, smoking, taking steroids and undergoing cosmetic surgery," she said. "It affects men and women and all ages, starting with kids who are as young as five years old saying they don't like how their bodies look."’
At the end of the day, a simple trip to the gym may be the prescription that will keep individuals singing and finding a satisfaction that will last!
