Vitamin D Improves Blood Sugar in Diabetics may Prevent Disease

In a study to be presented this year at The Endocrine Society’s Annual Meeting, doctors have found a direct correlation between diabetes and insufficient vitamin D levels in the blood. Vitamin D is readily available from sunlight and may be a key factor in controlling and even preventing diabetes. Doctors do not always screen diabetic patients for vitamin D so in many cases it’s up to the patient to ask for the test.
Dr. Esther Krug, MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, stated, “Since primary care providers diagnose and treat most patients with Type 2 diabetes, screening and vitamin D supplementation as part of routine primary care may improve health outcomes of this highly prevalent condition.”
She led a 5-year study of 124 Type 2 diabetic patients receiving regular medical treatment for their condition. A staggering 91% showed deficient or insufficient vitamin D levels. Only 6% were taking supplements.
The primary goal of managing diabetes is to stabilize blood sugar values. These values should reflect what normal non-diabetic blood sugar values are: a fasting blood sugar near 85 mg (range 70 to 99) or a HgbA1-C of 4.2. Krug’s study revealed that as vitamin D levels drop, blood sugar levels increase, as shown by a high hemoglobin A1-C count in the blood. A high HgbA1-C is greater than 6.0. This was especially prevalent among Blacks as compared to Caucasians.
Vitamin D is in salmon, tuna, whole eggs, cod liver oil, mushrooms and fortified milk and cereals. It is available as a supplement and just by standing in the sun a few minutes a day without sunscreen. Our skin makes Vitamin D when exposed to ultraviolet light found in sunlight. The recommended daily dosage is 2,000 to 5,000 units a day.
Of her research, Dr. Krug concluded, “This finding supports an active role of vitamin D in the development of Type 2 diabetes.”
