Vitamin D May Prevent Painful Knees

New research reveals that low levels of vitamin D are associated with knee pain and difficulty walking in individuals who suffer from osteoarthritis of the knee.
Osteoarthritis occurs when the surface lining the bones of the knee joint become ruff, uneven and pitted losing their normally smooth glistening appearance. Doctors have known for years that the most common reason for this breakdown of the bone surface, called cartilage, is due to a history of injury to the knee joint or excess weight creating extra stress on the surface lining the joints.
Now research shows a possible link between osteoarthritis (the breakdown of cartilage), and vitamin D. Dr. Tim McAlindon, MD, MPH, a professor at Tufts New England Medical Center, said of his research, “These preliminary results suggest that, among people with knee osteoarthritis, having a low vitamin D level is associated with more knee pain and greater functional limitation.”
Dr. McAlindon and his associates studied 100 participants. They measured and compared vitamin D levels with common symptoms of osteoarthritis such as knee pain or difficulty walking. They found that 47% of the volunteers were vitamin D deficient, and this group experienced increased pain and difficulty walking. They also measured the time needed to stand and sit repeatedly but this was not significantly related to vitamin D levels.
Calcium and phosphorus are vital for bone growth, repair and mineralization. Vitamin D helps the body absorb these vital nutrients. But when tested, many people are deficient especially as they age. It’s an easy vitamin to get either by supplementation, sun exposure or diet. It is found in fortified milk, margarine, breakfast cereals and oily fish. Recommended amounts of vitamin D are 5,000 units a day.
Dr. McAlindon concludes, “Future results from this ongoing randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial of vitamin D will help determine whether vitamin D is an effective disease-modifying intervention for knee osteoarthritis.”
