Walking Reduces Arthritis Pain and Improves Physical Function

Walking for a few minutes a day combined with the supplement glucosamine sulfate was shown to improve joint pain in patients with osteoarthritis. Researchers reported in the journal Arthritis Research and Therapy that walking 1500 steps twice a day (about two walks lasting 20-30 minutes each) greatly reduced the pain of arthritis and improved physical function.
Commenting on her research data, Dr. Kristiann Heech said these findings “provide preliminary evidence that osteoarthritis sufferers can benefit from a combination of glucosamine sulphate and walking 3000 steps per day for exercise, in bouts of at least 1500 steps each, on at least three days per week.”
Working with a team at the University of Queensland, Australia Dr. Heech recruited 36 patients with osteoarthritis, aged 42-73. All of the patients took glucosamine for 6 weeks, then began a 12 week waking program.
The patients were divided into two groups with one group walking 3 days a week and the other walking 5 days a week. The doctors monitored their progress using weekly planners, pedometers, weekly log sheets, and walking guides.
All of the walkers reported significantly less pain in their joints and significantly improved mobility. Walking 5 days a week did not have anymore benefit than walking 3 days a week.
Other studies have shown that reducing weight unloads weight bearing joints like the hip and knee in patients who suffer from osteoarthritis and can reduce joint pain as well.
One study reported in the British Medical Journal, found that overweight men (BMI>25) with osteoarthritis were 70% more likely to have a hip replacement.

Where is the evidence that glucosamine had any effect?

I agree with joecam. Where is the evidence that glucosamine had any affect on anything ????? I take glucosame every day; am I wasting my money????? Also, losing weight is going to help with joint pain; that's pretty basic knowledge. How much money was spent just to come up with such an obvious answer.
