Whole Foods Protect Against Disease and Obesity

The most popular foods eaten are hamburgers, French fries and
pizza. They are convenient, tasty and fill you up because they are
calorie dense foods. But how healthy are these foods and how do
they compare to other food choices in promoting health?
According to Dr. Heather Vincent, Phd, University of Florida
Orhopedics and Sports Medicine these popular food items lack key
health agents that fight disease. She had this to say, “We need to
find a way to encourage people to pull back on fat and eat more
foods rich in micronutrients and trace minerals from fruits, vegetables,
whole grains and soy.”
Her research team studied the diets of 54 young adults and found
that those who were overweight or obese ate less plant-based foods
and more saturated fats. Of overweight people Vincent said, “In
comparison to a normal-weight person, an obese person is always
going to be behind the eight ball because there are so many adverse
metabolic processes going on.”
She was referring to the elevated triglycerides and cholesterol as well
as the inflammation and oxidative stress, which usually accompany
obesity and are linked to heart disease, diabetes and joint disease.
The good news is phytochemical-rich foods can provide protection.
These are the micronutrients in brightly colored whole foods like leafy
greens, tomatoes, broccoli, berries, squash, nuts, etc.
Dr. Vincent urges us to eat the ‘good stuff’ first. “Fill your plate with
colorful low-calorie, varied-texture foods derived from plants first.
By slowly eating phytochemical-rich foods such as salads with olive
oil or fresh-cut fruits before your actual meal, you will likely reduce
the overall portion size, fat content and energy intake. In this way,
you’re ensuring that you get the variety of protective, disease-fighting
phytochemicals you need and controlling caloric intake.”
Fresh or frozen fruits and veggies are your ally against disease and
you can make change one small step at a time. Switch from coffee to
hot chocolate sweetened with stevia or reach for an apple instead of
a cereal bar.

Go as natural as possible and you can't go wrong. I avoid the soy products as they contain estrogens which may inhibit some weight loss based on other articles I have read. I also am currently avoiding most milk products, except for cottage cheeze and yogurt unless it is my unrestricted meal. I also avoid the white flour products and most breads and cereals during my program with the exception of steel-cut oats and whole-wheat or multi-grain wraps.

Down here we don't call 'em French Fries - we call them Freedom Fries. God Bless America
