Corporate Fitness

The first question that HR directors or wellness coordinators should ask themselves when trying to organize a corporate fitness strategy is, “What am I trying to accomplish?”. A good place to start is often with activity management or weight loss. The reason for this is that most companies in the United States, Canada, and abroad suffer from obesity in the workplace and weight loss is one of the easiest fitness goals to track.

Start simple. The last thing that a CEO or executive wants to hear is that they need to build a fitness center at the workplace or even at multiple worksites. If the money can be set aside for this type of endeavor, it can be an excellent long-term investment, but many employees have never felt comfortable in a gym environment and might feel even more uncomfortable around exercising around their co-workers.

The current best-practice solution for corporate fitness within the wellness community is to use some type of pedometer, or better yet accelerometer for each of the employees within your population. Some inexpensive pedometers can be purchased for as little as a dollar and they are easy enough for a child to use. The best corporate fitness plans utilize a pedometer or accelerometer that can not only measure steps, but can also measure intensity, duration, time, and calories as well as upload results to a computer.

It is difficult to change what cannot be measured. Most employees find that once they begin using a pedometer or accelerometer that they enjoy improving their exercise levels and find new ways to move around a little more at the office, at home, or even at the gym. Uploading results over time can help employees set goals and build a historic activity history log to refer to as they lose or gain weight.

Uploading activity results to a computer can also be a powerful tool to combat obesity for companies as a whole. If your company’s wellness provider has the appropriate systems in place, it is easy to create groups and teams for employees to play games online and even compete with one another. Aggregate activity statistics can also help executive decision makers see how active their company locations are around the globe and provide aid to locations that may need a little help to increase activity levels.

Once a foundation of activity management has been achieved with the corporate fitness plan, HR directors and wellness coordinators can get a little more creative by adding specific challenges throughout the year to boost participation and keep things fun and engaging. These challenges might include a “walk around the world challenge” or even be nutrition-based such as “making the switch to drinking water” or “hold the stuffing at thanksgiving”. There are a variety of challenges that can be fun and even tracked via online tools seamlessly if you work with your wellness provider to accomplish the goals you are trying to achieve.
