Corporate Wellness

Corporate wellness has seen a huge uptake in acceptance for workplace available over the last decade. Here are some startling corporate wellness statistics:

Healthcare in the United States doubled from 1990 to 2001 and is expected to double again by 2012 (Source: Partnerships for Prevention www.prevent.org).

Heart disease and stroke comprise 4 out of 10 of the most costly health conditions affecting employers (Source: Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine www.joem.org).

With every 1 percent increase in Body Mass Index (BMI), an individual’s annual health care costs goes up $120 (Source: Boston Globe www.boston.com).

Each employee that smokes costs an employer an additional $3,856 a year in healthcare costs and lost productivity (Source: Billings Gazette www.billingsgazette.net).

70% of healthcare costs in the United States are preventable (Source: American Heart Association www.americanheart.org).

There are many benefits to implementing corporate wellness within your company. Statistically, healthcare costs continue to rise and employers are left with few options to curtail increasing cost of care and need for care. Not only are healthcare costs rising, but employees are aging and lifestyle modifiable disease risk factors are causing employees in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere in the world to be less and less healthy. By altering the curve for the rising need for care, the overall cost to employers and employees decreases dramatically. A healthier population needs less healthcare coverage than a sicker population.

The first step that most companies take in establishing corporate wellness within their organization is health promotion. Health promotion is easy to do and can be as simple as posting fliers around drinking fountains or sending out period emails to your employee staff. Once awareness has risen and employees have shown a genuine interest in employee health, many HR departments establish a wellness committee or even hire a wellness coordinator.

Over time, corporate wellness has shown to be most beneficial when it is coupled with some outside consulting, goal setting, and often-times working with a corporate wellness company to design a program to specifically fit the needs of your company. One advantage that outside corporate wellness firms have over internal company committees is the ability to establish metrics and look at insurance utilization claims. Due to HIPAA constraints, employers cannot look at medical claims information. Wellness companies are uniquely positioned to be able to keep all personal information private from other employees and employers and yet analyze claims information in order to design specific interventions that will improve employee health status.
