Employee Health Program

Employee health program implementation continues to get more attention as obesity and chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and stress threaten the economic stability and health of the United States, Canada, and other countries around the globe. More than just a challenge face by individuals or small organizations, the obesity epidemic is literally something that affects all nations of the world.

How do you measure the success of an employee health program? Many corporations choose various metrics for success, but three of the most common ways to measure whether an employee health program is improving the health status of a population include total healthcare costs, employee participation in the employee health program, and aggregate health risk appraisal (HRA) score improvement.

Employee populations that spend less money on total healthcare costs are usually healthier than populations that require more medical attention. The reason for this is simple: healthier employees spend less time in the hospital and emergency room. By implementing a successful employee health program, employees become more aware of their current health status through health screenings, health promotion, health coaching, and health risk appraisals. These strategies are considered an investment by many employers and decision-makers that can yield a strong return on investment year over year.

Employee participation can be just as crucial as the actual employee health program that is planned for and created. Programs that fail to get more than 50 percent participation usually fail to have a return on investment that covers the cost of the program. Many times, the employees that are most anxious to participate in an employee health program are either healthy or have been thinking about improving their health for some time. Oftentimes, it isn’t until participation levels exceed 60 or 70 percent that employees with multiple risk factors can be identified for health coaching. Some of the most successful companies that implement an employee health program will either make the program mandatory for their employees to receive medical insurance or they will have a low barrier of entry for the health risk appraisal or health screening. By helping employees feel incentivized to attend health screening and take a health risk appraisal, it can be easy to skyrocket participation throughout the organization. Companies with executive buy-in from the top that are able to create a promotional DVD prior to program rollout each year have also shown considerable increases in participation.

Companies that can improve the overall wellness score of their organization typically spend less than companies that continue to rise in aggregate health risk appraisal scores. Each year, companies have the opportunity to participate in health risk appraisals that calculate the health risk for individuals and populations. By employees making small changes in their exercise, diet, and other areas, they risk of disease and injury can be drastically reduced.
