Employees wellness programs help keep employees healthy by promoting exercise and nutrition as well as one-on-one health coaching. It is important to realize that even the best wellness programs are only as successful as employees allow the wellness program to be by participating in the program.

Participation in wellness programs is easy to improve if there is executive buy-in from HR Directors, Wellness Coordinators, and most especially top executives such as the CEO and CFO. There are countless success stories of companies that had relatively low participation levels (under 30%) that have made drastic increases into participation levels well above 80% by a sudden shift in upper-level management buy-in.

Some companies eventually choose to make employees wellness programs mandatory by only providing medical insurance for employees that have participated in some level of a wellness program such as health screening or taking a health risk assessment (HRA). Although this policy change usually has some amount of employee pushback at the beginning, overtime many employees respect upper-management’s decision to take healthcare coverage seriously and begin to measure and monitor their own employee health more regularly.
